Why write the book?
After six years of owning and operating a national service bureau (clearinghouse), Ms. Holmes realized there was a huge need for a practical resource and guide to medical billing and office billing procedures. In fact, she was amazed at the amount of confusion as well as the staggering number of denied claims.
Her perspective at that time was from the receiver of the claim. Her company was the go-between for the practice and the insurance company. It became quite evident that the future of practice revenue would decline if employees were not provided with an affordable resource for training as well as learning new formats and rules. These rules were a part of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, which included the passage of the Correct Coding Initiative and the False Claims Act, all of which have been integrated over the past 12 years.
Ms. Holmes consulted with numerous people during this time, and sincerely wanted to give the industry, especially the small practice, a practical resource that would truly help them. This is what prompted her to create and write this much-needed guide. Now, after 10 years of billing, consulting and continuous education, Ms. Holmes is again motivated to help. An updated 2nd edition is underway.
"Practical Guide to Medical Billing (1st Edition)" may still be found at Amazon.com. The book is authored by Ms. Deanna Holmes and published in 1997 by the U.S. Department of Commerce. Her 2nd edition, due for completion in 2008, is underway and will again be published by the U.S. Dept. of Commerce. Check back soon.
